I worked my first wedding in 2013 as a makeup artist and since then have had the adventure and joy of working hundreds of weddings as a wedding photographer, videographer, makeup artist, and updo artist.
I've photographed maternity and newborn sessions since 2016 and became a mom myself in 2024. I LOVE love and talking weddings and motherhood with anyone who lets me- that's where my blog comes in.

If you’re planning a wedding at Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, or hoping to use the grounds for your wedding or engagement photos, it is one of the most recognizable and versatile photography locations in the city.
As a Hamilton wedding photographer, Dundurn is a location I can return to again and again without creating the exact same gallery. It’s extremely popular for engagement sessions, which is not hard to understand! The grand white pillars are the obvious draw, but there is also so much more to work with: mature trees, stone architecture, open lawns, historic buildings, pathways, gardens and views overlooking Burlington Bay.
For couples who love wedding photography that feels timeless and elegant without becoming overly formal, Dundurn Castle is especially beautiful.

Dundurn gives you something that can be surprisingly hard to find in one Hamilton wedding location: variety without a lot of travel.
We can use the front of the castle for classic portraits, move toward the Coach House and surrounding stonework for something warmer and more textural, photograph the wedding party under the mature trees, and finish with softer images through the grounds.
My approach to wedding photography is very candid and people-focused, so I love that Dundurn gives us enough variety to create a beautiful gallery efficiently without pulling you away from your wedding for hours.
It also feels very specifically Hamilton, which makes it a great portrait location even if your ceremony and reception are happening elsewhere in the city.

Dundurn isn’t only a portrait location. Couples can also hold their wedding ceremony on the property.
The two primary outdoor ceremony settings are The Maple Walk and The Cockpit.
The Maple Walk is a beautiful choice for couples who want their ceremony to feel romantic, green and naturally tucked away.
The mature trees create a softer setting, and afterward you can transition directly into portraits around the rest of the property.

The Cockpit gives you more of that recognizable historic Dundurn feeling.
The classical architecture makes a beautiful ceremony backdrop, and the castle grounds are immediately available for photographs afterward.

This is the classic Dundurn photograph.

The scale of the columns creates beautiful architectural portraits, while the light-coloured exterior reflects soft light onto faces. I especially love this area for couples portraits, editorial bridal portraits and larger wedding parties.
Stepping farther back lets us show the full scale of Dundurn and gives you those wider photographs that immediately identify the location.

The Coach House and surrounding buildings bring in warmer textures like stone and brick, which helps your gallery feel more varied than using only the main castle.

Some of my favourite Dundurn images don’t actually have the castle in them.
The mature trees and pathways are perfect for walking photos, candid wedding-party images and quieter portraits that feel less posed.

Depending on your timeline and the light, the areas overlooking the water can give us another completely different look, especially later in the day.

Dundurn can photograph beautifully throughout the day, but if we have flexibility, I love working here later in the afternoon or closer to golden hour.
The lower light gives us more options around the open lawns and creates beautiful warmth through the trees.
That said, wedding timelines don’t always allow for perfect golden-hour conditions. One of the reasons Dundurn works so well is that the architecture and mature trees still give us options earlier in the day.
If your wedding is happening elsewhere in Hamilton, I would rather have 30 relaxed minutes here than try to squeeze everything into a rushed ten-minute stop.
If you’re planning formal wedding photography at Dundurn Castle, make sure the permit is part of your planning.
Dundurn National Historic Site is managed through the City of Hamilton, and the City has specific photography permits for museum properties.
Rates and policies can change, so I always recommend confirming the current requirements directly with the City of Hamilton when planning your wedding or session.
If you’re holding your ceremony at Dundurn, photography access may be handled differently as part of your rental, so confirm that when booking.
Dundurn is especially good for couples who love:
You also don’t need to actually get married at Dundurn for it to make sense. It works beautifully as a portrait location for weddings happening elsewhere in the city.

Dundurn is also one of my favourite engagement-session locations in Hamilton as I’m sure you’ve noticed in this variety of images shared.
An engagement session gives us more freedom with timing because we can intentionally schedule around evening light rather than fitting everything into a wedding-day timeline.
The location also works really well for an outfit change. A more formal look suits the architecture, while something relaxed feels completely different once we move into the gardens and grounds.

Seeing a real wedding photographed at Dundurn is very different from seeing images of the empty property.
Real galleries show you how the location works with couples, wedding parties, family photos and changing light throughout the day.
Yes. The City of Hamilton offers outdoor wedding ceremony locations at Dundurn National Historic Site, including The Maple Walk and The Cockpit.
Formal wedding and social photography on the grounds may require a City of Hamilton permit. Because fees and policies can change, confirm current requirements directly with the City.
Absolutely. Many couples use Dundurn purely as a portrait location because it offers historic architecture, greenery and multiple backgrounds within one property.
For couples portraits alone, around 30 minutes is ideal. If we are also photographing your wedding party and family photos there, I would build in a larger window.
Yes. It is one of my favourite Hamilton engagement locations because you get architecture, gardens, greenery and open space within walking distance.
Spring and summer give you lush greenery, fall brings beautiful colour, and winter still works because the architecture itself is such a strong backdrop.
If you’re planning a wedding at Dundurn Castle, using the property for your wedding portraits, or considering a Dundurn engagement session, I would love to help you plan photography that makes the most of the location without turning your wedding day into an all-day photoshoot.
I photograph weddings throughout Hamilton, Ancaster, Dundas, Burlington and the surrounding area, with a focus on natural, candid storytelling alongside the portraits you actually want framed in your home.
For me, great Hamilton wedding photography isn’t only about finding an impressive backdrop. It is about understanding the location, working with the light, building enough breathing room into the timeline and then letting you get back to actually enjoying your wedding.
